Jessica's Story

Jessica met Duane at a party at her friend's house when she was 14. Duane, her eventual trafficker, was 27. Unknown to her parents, the two chatted on social media apps for weeks. In time, Jessica was sexting and sending pictures to Duane, which he used to coerce her into more acts of sexual exploitation, including "dates" for his friends and strangers for money. His actions were paired with false promises and sometimes, painful consequences for disobedience. Duane made Jessica believe he was the only one who really loved her and would accept her; she felt like damaged goods. She also feared shaming her family, so she stayed quiet while the pressure and trauma built within her. Jessica's relationship with Duane eventually led to her run away from home. She began a life on the streets engaging in survival sex, drugs, homelessness, and was arrested for offenses like prostitution.

Jessica eventually attempted suicide and emergency room nurses identified her as a victim of potential sexual exploitation and trafficking. They referred her to LOTUS Legal Clinic for specialized legal services. While Jessica got therapy and medical care, her lawyer helped protect her safety and privacy interests during the trial of her trafficker and worked with her to clear her legal record of prostitution charges. With her criminal background clear, she was able to apply for housing, school, and employment. Jessica now rents her own apartment and entered school for a career providing mentoring to at-risk youth.

Jessica's story is inspiring, but many victims fall through the cracks and do not receive appropriate care or services when they meet those who could help them- especially legal help. LOTUS stands ready as the solution, and with your help: Together We Rise.

As experts in the field, LOTUS has a proven track record of providing legal safety for survivors, protecting their rights, educating toward preventing harm from sexual violence, and assisting law enforcement in holding offenders accountable. This is our main focus, and your support is critical.
